  • Turtle Tank

What years and models did the "Turtle Tank" come as standard equipment? Working on 66 xlh.

It first appeared in '59 on the XLH. It ran through the '60s on XLH and optional on the XLCH. There are slight variations over the years with different badge mounts and slight contour differences. What year are you interested in?
Correction: the '59 and '60 XLH used the K style tank but with badge recesses.

The style you need was used from 1966 until about 1972. Yours should have the skinny vent tube coming out of the bottom to work with the original tillotson carb. The turtle tank came out in 1961, but the 1961-65 style will not have the vent tube for the tillotson since those bikes used a Linkert carb. Also, the first two years (1961 & 62) have recessed "cutouts" for the oval shaped badges to mount. So just look at the bottom of the tank for the vent tube and you will able to tell if it's correct for your bike.

Oh, and the "turtle tank" was the standard tank on the XLH model, so it would be correct for your bike.

Here's a photo of what I am talking about. Notice the single curved vent tube that comes out of the tank a few inches behind the outlet for the petcock:

.....and here is what the paint scheme should look like on your 1966. Any of the colors available that year with white tank panels as shown:

The 66 tank is the last year of the slant sided turtle tank. The 67-72 tanks are straight or verticle sided.
