hey i am wondering if any one has any pictures of a bare xr frame , is the frame the same as other ironhead frames ?

Still not enough info. What model XR, Dirt track, XRTT roadracer , or some other variation?
Iron head or alloy? Do you have the engine and what year is it, all the frames are NOT the same! there is an entire industry that exists relating to modern XRs. What do you consider "traditional"?

Contact Carl Patrick Racing for XR info. He builds lots of them. There is also an XR registry but I can't think of it right now. Early XRs use H-D frames, but most after '75 use aftermarket units. I understand you can still buy the basic castings for an engine from Harley but all the finish work is done by the tuners to finish an engine. And there are actually a fair number of them around, just not in the vintage world. You have to plug into the racing world. You might also contact Roeder Racing. They have lots of stuff as well as connections.

1980 was the last year that the factory built the XR frame. There were aftermarket frames before that. After 1980, you bought an engine kit from H-D and bought the frame and running gear in the aftermarket. Factory frames are pretty rare and probably pricey, if you can find one. The twin shock aftermarket frames come up and are still resonable. They switched to a monoshock set up later. I had a 95 Kevin Atherton C&J mono shock roller. XR engine parts are very pricey! The last I heard, the factory engine kit was about 12 grand. It takes thousands of dollars of machine work to get it to a race ready motor. Much of the older XR parts available on eBay etc. are worn out and overpriced! Check out the vintage flattrack site(VFT.org). XR parts and bikes come up quite regularly. I gave up and sold both my XR750 and the last C&J Buell Blast dirt track chassis. Just too expensive to get them up and running. I've got an XR-750 factory engine manual I'll sell cheap. Hi. John Steele at hi-speedmotorcycles.com in Chagrin Falls, Oh. is the man to talk to.
He has probably restored more XR's than anyone else. I found out about him in the early 90's when I was restoring mine. His website has everything you could want about xr's. Also Alan Girdler wrote a book...Harley Davidson XR750 which shows the history of the XR and has lots of pics and other technical info. His book can probably be found on ebay. Just search harley xr750. Hope this helps...Mike
