Sportster Variations

Greetings,

Does anyone have a link to an online site, or reference to a book, or other material that depicts via images stock/factory original only Harley-Davidson Sportster variations, including paint schemes, XLH, XL, XLCH, and any other variations, from about 1960 onwards?

Having owned and ridden sportsters since '60s( owned new '67 XLCH) this is a subject that greatly interests me. I have an extensive collection of Sportster literature, Sales Brochures, H-D "The Enthusiast", accessory catalogues and magazines from this period. Is there a specific year you need info on?

No model/year in particular. I'm one of those anal-types that usually prefer a bike in factory-original condition. Seems 99% of Sportsters have been at least painted, but usually even dramatically modified. I'd like to be able to know how a specific model/year should appear in noted factory original condition by referencing a set of images by model/year/colors. Thanks!

I agree. Nothing like seeing a factory original sportster. I restored a 1966 XLCH in 2000. Whenever I displayed it in public, comments were made how few correct Sportsters are seen nowadays. Sportsters always had harder lives than Big Twins, due to use in competition and young hellions riding them!

Books I would recommend for Sportster info: Rick Conner - H-D Data Book; published 1996 and Allen Girdler & Ron Hussey - H-D Sportsters; published 1995. Both books are published by Motorbooks International.
