  • Model K damper removal

Hi, I am trying to get the damper out of the sliders but am having some trouble with it. It looks like you might need some special tool or socket for it.
The forks are 33mm but about 6" over. I am trying to get them back to stock lenght.
    Thx for the help.

You don't say what year? I know on my '54 and '56 all I had to do was remove the 5/16 nut on the bottom of the slider and the sliders came off of the baffle tube. I used to use needle nosed pliers to remove the retainer that was under the top plugs.

Hi Chris, dont know the exact year, all I know it they are 33mm. I have a problem with getting the retainer plug out, it seems to be stuck in there good. I already tried the needle nose pliers and made some homemade tool but no luck. The sliders came right out of the tubes with no problem.
      Thx for the reply.

Are you talking about the spring preload adjusters at the top of the springs inside the tubes? I simply welded two drill bits the same size as the holes in the retainer to an old socket of the correct O.D. and that's my tool. Careful, we don't know what the hippies did to make up the spring length, could be a lot of pressure on them puppies.

The real tool can be purchased from V-Twin. Part number 7700-3. See it on page 1258 of the online catalogue.

Take the bottom bolt off (damper one at the bottom)before trying to loosen the top piece, this should take the tension off the spring.
