Depends, do the belly numbers match, is it complete, are the rocker and cam covers polish or original finish (some polish, not all), 6vt generator?, OEM or after market cylinders, etc., it the trans in there, etc. Also, do the cases have any repairs, specifically the transmission speedo drive area.
Prices seem to have been going down a bit in the recession, but a complete early sportster motor, with all original bits and title, I would think 1,500 to 2,000 for somebody that was doing a resto and had alot of the other parts need for the job(early H and CH sportster parts are hard to come by). 1,000 if someone wanted a chopper motor.
I could be way off in this, but paid 5,000 for a running 62, with quite a few rare bits in it, and a title, and 3,500 for a killer basket case 61 XLH hot rod. A really nice basket.
