  • Tillotson Diaphragm Cover

    Good Morning,

I'm assembling an HD-1D Tillotson carburetor for my 1970 CH. I have a couple of complete OEM Tillotson rebuild kits that I acquired many years ago when I worked at Eastern Motorcycle Parts. Back then, we used to wholesale new Tillotson carburetors and their rebuild kits that we bought directly from Tillotson. The problem I have is that I don't have any new diaphragm covers, and unfortunately the ones that VTwin sells don't have the accelerator pump check valve.

As an alternate, I have several used covers that are in good condition physically, but as they all did, they're now brownish-yellow in color from years of gasoline exposure (actually, they used to turn relatively quickly). Therefore, I've lightly wire brushed one in preparation for painting.

My question is if anyone knows of a paint that can be used on plastic for this purpose that is resistant to gasoline fumes?

    Thanks,

I used Rustoleum Automotive Primer and High Performance enamel after a light sanding and cleaning in MEK. The finished piece looks very good. My only negative observation is that the white color is a couple of shades brighter than a new plastic cover. But that's just very minor complaint - and it will fade over time, I'm sure. Overall, I'm quite pleased with the results.
