  • Harley tachometer kit 92050-62

Does any one know anything about the Tach kit offered by Harley for the 1962-1964 XLCH and XLRTT sportsters mainly the bracket and cable and from what I have been told the the cables for the Smiths chronometric are different from the magnetic tach after 1964 any input would help. I have acquired the smiths RC 1302/00 chronometric tach for the kit but looking for correct bracket and cable.

GENUINE-1962-69-Harley-Ironhead-XLCH-Sportster-Tachometer-Cable.jpg Is there a place or any one that might have the build specs for this cable so I could have it made. There are plenty for aftermarket magneto tach cables the right length out there.

I don't think the cable is different in any way other than length. The 1965 & 1966 fork mounted tach required a longer cable.

I contacted vintagesmithscables.com in Canada and they did not have the build specs and said that there is cable differences in cables for the chronometric and magnetic tach such as the drive inner cable and the depth of the 12mm nut that screws to the tach and it does make sense that if the inner drive cable is too long it could bind and damage the tach and I have seen the cables online with two different nuts. I will just have to check these situations when installing. I like the look of the over under and maybe because I only have the single speedo and bracket. But have not seen bracket anywhere my have to fabricate one.

I have made a bracket out of stainless steel but still looking for OEM! This is the the replication of tach kit supplied by Harley Davidson for the 62-64 sportsters. IMG_1733.jpgIMG_1734.jpgIMG_1735.jpg

Above is a perfect example of how it would have looked from an original paint 1962 xlch that I had in my possession.

Here is my 1962 xlch that I restored with the routing pattern, I bought the tach kit nos in the box with everything in it back in the day. The cable has no vinyl casing.

Nice pictures of kit I started out with the SmithS 1302/00 the correct chronometric and bought a 34 &1/4 inch aftermarket magneto cable and cut the end of cable to meet the 7 1/6 inch for chronometric per some specs. I found on line. found a aftermarket tach drive gear that will work also and fits into the magneto base and will works but no room for the tach drive thrust washer (6248) that I cannot find one anywhere have been modifying a brass washer for the thrust washer. I do not like V-twin Parts at all If I can find OEM parts I buy. Found a tach bracket on Jan Willem but can't buy closed till 04/2022 next year and will not sell outside Europe need someone to buy overseas and forward to US. Can't believe the price for the tach kits were $41.00 !

When I bought the kit I thought I needed my head examined back in the day. Now....I think I did OK. I admire your skills on making it, polish it up and use it for the time being until one pop's up. There's only a handful of people that if they took a good look at it that it wasn't right. Hell, V-twin makes a living at it.

After some time and help locating the remaining parts (thrust washer & correct bracket) needed for the Tach Kit 92050-62 I was able to complete a working version of this kit with some after market parts and some original parts. Wish they all could have been original parts but it works and looks good what else could one ask for besides the winning numbers. Thanks
