  • Early Sportster Frame ID

Picked up a Sporty frame that is supposed to be 1957. How do I tell?

The date code would be a good indication.

As Chris says, the date code is your first reference point. It is on the seat mounting casting, right side.

The 1957 frame will have the numeric digit first and the letter second. (example 7 D) The later frames such a a 1967 frame will appear as D 7. The 1957 frame could also have a 6 numeric digit followed by the letter. There are other characteristics, if you can post a picture of it would be best.

OK--Mine has 9A so that would be 1959. So next question--what is a fair price and is anyone interested. Looks to be in good condition.

Condition is everything, Is it an xl or xlch frame? Post pictures, it's the only way you'll get an accurate value.

Unfortunately I am computer illiterate and do not know how to even start to put a picture on this site. Can put them on eBay. Someday when someone has 8 hours to spare, they can explain it to me. Is there something that I can look at to determine xl or xlch?

Go to www.photobucket.com and open a FREE account. Upload your picture there. Once uploaded go to your library and copy the IMG code. Paste the IMG code here and wallah, you have pictures. No resizing necessary.

Chris, you could have said they are stamped in or they are cast in etc etc

Several have replied, 47658-52 is the casting number, the date code is on the seat mounting casting, right side.

The telling features are the oil tank mounts, etc, to distinguish between a CH frame and an H frame. He has already determined it is '59, first regular production year for the CH, so detailed shots of the entire frame are needed.
