Is pin P/N 600 for transmission MAINSHAFT thrust washer needed?

1966 xlch..got the bike apart for crank rebuild and noticed the pin for trans thrust wash not in case..after inspection of washer ect. all is good no metal transfer no burn and checks on mic...was wondering if pin is needed..I did order pin and going to install but I was interested in others thoughts on this

My thoughts are it keeps the thrust washer from turning....if all looks fine I guess it most have been happy without it, but I would put it back in.
