  • XLCH magneto problems

I have a stock Fairbanks Morris magneto on a XLCH. I replaced the coil and condenser, cleaned and gapped points as well as replaced the plugs with nos #4 plugs. The magnet seems strong. The bike started and ran well. The next day it wouldn't start. Poking around a little I found the spark intermittent, sparking hot on the first kick then either getting weak or no spark after several kicks. Almost always sparks hot on the first kick after a brief rest. Even before replacing the components it would occasionally spark. Can anyone make sense of this? Thanks.

perhaps the magnets need to be recharged.

The magnet feels strong and I don't believe that would be intermittent. Any other replies would be appreciated.

Some of the marketer condensers that I've seen are very inconsistent. I would get one from Dave Shaw at Morris Magneto in New Jersey as a starting point. Actually, its probably a good idea to give him a call and ask him about your problem. if anyone has seen it, it's Dave.

Hopefully not using carbon filament plug wires?
