  • XLCH Tank Paint

Does anyone have a clear side shot (preferably a closeup) of a factory-painted 1964 XLCH gas tank? I need to provide my painter with an accurate photo so he can measure and lay out the pattern. Also, I believe that all stripe widths are 7/16". Can anyone confirm that dimension?

    Thanks...1964 XLCH Red.jpg

    Bill,
Stripe widths are 1/4" from 62 to 69.

I don't have one handy. There is a overhead shot and side shot of the bike in the riders handbook.

Sorry for the crummy picture but I haven't figured out how to use the scanner with my Windows 7.

I found this one. Not a straight side view but I hope it helps.

                  Bill,

One more point, the 1/4" was also fitted to the 61 XL and the white panel is painted over the base color.

Dave, as usual I agree. However, it should be noted that the 1/4" white pinstripes on 1968 and 1969 tanks were tape stripes rather than painted on. I know you knew that, but wanted to clarify for anyone who may be restoring one of these bikes.

                      Jerry,
Roger that and thanks. In the spirit of picking fly poop out of pepper, regarding my previous post on panel paint over base color, the 58 model year I believe after considerable discussion elsewhere had the base color over the birch white panel. Probably due to the white panels on big twin fenders. We believe that 59 and forward was white over panel.

                        CHris,
That 2nd (factory) photo that you posted is absolutely outstanding! Pohlman Studios, like so many early photographers used such high quality, well-ground lenses that allows you to see so many small, fine points that would be impossible to spot in later photographs. Thanks so much for sharing that!

I would love to acquire a hard copy or high-resolution pdf file of that shot, and possible one of the left side not only for reference, but to frame as well. Do you know if they are they available anywhere for purchase?

The pictures were taken with a Big Box camera that was still at the MoCo photo studio back in the late eighties. It produced 8X10 negativies. Pohlman processed the film.
My scan is 600 DPI. Copy it and have your print made.

                            Chris,
I have a large-format color HP engineering plotter, but unfortunately, the 600 dpi resolution causes loss of a lot of detail as the plot size increases. But thanks anyway... And please let me know if you become aware of a hard-copy or high-res. source for the photo. I would be interested in purchasing one.
