  • What Trans Oil?

I know, I know..this will generate lots of "opionions" but I'd still like to know.

4speed tranny is rebuilt and ready for lubrication.. what brand, what product and what weight... ?

In the old days the factory recommendation is to use the same weight oil as in your engine. 50 in winter and 60 in summer. However the MoCo now has an EP transmission oil that works great. Lubricating qualities of a higher number but still flows like 60.

If it is too thick it won't lubricate properly. That is why ya never put 90 wt gear oil in an H-D tranny.

What Chris is referring to specifically is the supply to the MainDriveGear rollers.

The only way in is around a thrustwasher. And the way out is to face the same restriction to get back in.
        Typical H-D logic.

If its a tired warhorse, with endplay on the MDG enough to wear out the chain sideways, and everything oozes from everywhere anyway,
(or just a fresh barnyarded rebuild to sell the machine to a sucker),
then heavy snotty goober will have to do!

I swear I found banana peels once. Decomposed of course.

          consensus?

I don't think I expected this much disparity of thought...

Chris what weight is the MoCo oil you refer to?

and the old school mechanic that put the tranny back together said use 90...(any 90 gear lube sold at auto parts stores)..... but I'm hearing lots of stuff.

We replaced (most of) the worn **** (I hope)...so while the old 4 speeds will never be a new 5 speed, she ought to hold lube!

anyone else have rhyme or reason around this? I'm surprised by the responses..

The MoCo sells a new transmission gear oil that has the lubricating qualities of 90 but the viscosity of 60.
