I have a 71 shovel that has a stripped hole in the case for the oil pump. I want to put a heli coil in it but am having trouble with the thread pitch. I come up with 1/4 x24 but can not find any heli coils for that pitch. Does any one know if that is the correct pitch.

Yes, 1/4"-24 Helicoils are available from your local Eastern Mcy Parts or V-TWIN dealer.
You do not need a special tap, as a 5/16"-24 tap works perfectly.
