  • Rear Highway Bar Question

    Hello Everyone,

Perhaps this is a Panhead question - I'm unsure, my 69 Shovelhead has rear highway bars (crash bars) that the top mount goes through the rear shock upper stud. Maybe it is the upper stud, I can't really tell. It seems like I've this set up on Panheads. What years was this arrangement (as opposed to rear bars having a tap that the shock stud goes though)? I need to replace the rear shocks and I'm wondering how to get this apart. Thank You! Joe

OK looks like it might be 65-66 specific. How does the top come apart?

Pretty sure you have to take the nut off the stud from inside the fender, unbolt the bottom mount, pull out the stud with the crash bar still attached, then unscrew the stud from the crash bar.

If you remove the inner (large) nut you can turn the stud with a wrench to unscrew it from the rear guard on threaded models. Once the guard is off the shock will remove normally.
