I have an oem police mounted shifter with the correct reverse shifter gate and 3/R in my 69 flh that I have a couple issues with: Firstly it pops out of reverse most of the time, but sometimes it will get stuck in reverse and I have to shut the engine off to get it out of reverse. Secondly; sometimes it does not go into 3 gear, but I feel the detente seating in, I then have to slow down to down shift into 2nd and then it will go into 3rd. The shifter handle has about .100" clearance in the gate in all gears. 3rd gear will go in almost every time if allowed to go past the detente seat just a bit. 3rd gear stays in gear and the transmission does not make any kind of noise.
I have always had these issues with this transmission since I put it in. The transmission came out of a 1970, so I had the mainshaft changed to fit into the 1969 flh.
