  • parts book hardware designation

Looking through the '58-'68 parts book, I notice that some hardware has a "W" designation after it. Is this some sort of finish designation, like maybe cad plate?

Sorry the experts won't chime in, Omar,...

So I'll just take a wild guess to see if it draws them out.

It seems like a "P" applied to certain lightweights, so I'll wager the "W" was for golf carts.

    Odds are in my favor!

Thanks for "trolling" for the experts, Cotten. I'm a little doubtful as to the "W" being for golf carts. One piece of hardware, in particular, is 4337W. It's a 3/8-16 bolt with a 1/2" hex, 2-5/8" long. Holds the master cylinder in one spot, and the right front footboard stud holds it in the other. I guess it could be for golf cart use in some other spot, but its place on a big twin is pretty specific. Had a short conversation with a customer of the old dude at Oley, and he said the "W" was cad plate, but that was the only verification I could get.

I've heard the same that "W" indicates cad.

The "W" stood for White, which was internal code for Cadmium, it became a parts book thing when Zinc started to be a common finish as well to differentiate the two.

The "P" stood for packaging. As in the Aeromachi parts were received from Italy and repacked into H-D marked envelopes and boxes.
