  • 1966 FL police special dash

I am restoring a 1966 Harley Davidson FL police special. I understand that when you were stopped for speeding the officer would lock his speedo with a trigger on the left side of the dash to show the driver his speed for issuing a ticket. I have the original speedo with the lock mechanisim but am missing the trigger that activates the speed lock. Does anyone have a photo of a 1966 police special dash with this speed lock.
    Thanks

There is no "trigger", the lock is activated by a button on the right side of the handlebars, it is electric. The small button on the left side of the dash is the release.

Thanks Robbie do you know where I could find a picture of this switch? This looks like something I'll have a hard time finding.

        Pete,
What are you referring to as "switch"? The handlebar button is the same as a horn button. It grounds the circuit making the solenoid on the speedo body kick in. The release lever is merely a strip of steel with a button head riveted to it. When depressed it releases the locking lever on the solenoid. It is all in the parts books.

Thank you Chris again for the help. I looked at my speedo and found the wires which I thought were just to a light bulb must go to the soleniod. Im going to try it with my battery charger and see if it locks!!
That was a great link. There wasn't a lot of "bling" on the FL Police models I see where I am going to need to black out a bunch of chrome.
If you come across the parts I would definitely be interested in buying a release mechanisim from you.
I've added a couple of pix of dash and bike
            Thanks again Chris66 2.JPG

So talking about one of these? They are not particularly rare. I am sure I also have a few around if only I was better organized. Jerry

                Thanks Jerry
I have the solenoid on my speedo but am now looking for the re-set button.
                Thanks

Different agencies ordered bikes with different packages. for instance CHP ordered bikes with lots of chrome and LAPD had everything blacked out.

I also have a '66FL police bike and can help with photos etc. Do you still need the photo of the release spring under the dash cover ? The little nob on my spring broke also and Chris has been telling me of his bag of them for years.

OK Scott. You shamed me into getting out of my Barcalounger and go out to the shop. I didn't find the baggie but i did find one loose one. It is yours. Just make me an offer that I can't refuse. :-)

                      I also found these.

Pete. This is what is looks like when installed. You could probably make one.
