No, my Simpson will not measure milli-amps. I have used it for >1 amp DC. For milli-amps, I thought maybe finding an old panel-mounted milli-amp meter might do the trick.
I agree leave the genie alone!

Get thee to the dumpsters and smash up an old cassette deck or stereo for a VU meter.
I admit they were far more common before the crash of 'O8,... and there has been no recovery, inspite of what the media feeds us.

I too have scrounged a dumpster or two! In "VU", are you referring to a Volume Unit Meter. I looked up simple schematics for both VU (appears to operate in micro amps or 0.000001) and milli-amp meters (0.001). There is some difference in the passive analog VU with diodes & resistors vs. the milli-amp meter with resistors. I can see where it would measure those minuscule amps!
