sounds like they didn't weld the one piece in the right place that holds the tank check that with a straight rod to see if it's in the right place

Sounds like the speedo mount was welded on cocked to one side. This is why ya got to put a 7/8" piece of round stock down the speedo cable hole when your jiging it up.

Post some pics if you can and a solution can probably be found for you here. It would have to be pretty bad to require a new frame.

              Hi.
There are a few critical measurements that need to be observed when a replacement speedo base casting is welded to a neck.
If the replacement speedo base casting has a steering dampner boss, it will need to be the correct distance from the centre of the bearing cup to locate the steering dampner washer.

The rear speedo base pad (the pad with 2 holes) needs to be the correct height from the backbone. If it is too low the speedo base plate will hit on the tanks.
If the pad is too high, the cowl will not fit to the tanks properly.
Both, front and rear pads need to be in the correct plane to the face of the bearing cup so that the base plate, speedo, and cowling, match up to both gas tank surfaces.
The speedo cable hole in the replacement part will eventually need to be in alignment with the hole in the main part of the neck to get the speedo cable nut through. As Bob has suggested, use 7/8" round bar or a 7/8 drill.
If the other dimensions are observed and this hole is not in alignment, disregard the hole alignment.
Weld the part with the other dimensions observed, and then run the 7/8" drill through to line up the two parts after the completion of welding to clear the hole for the speedo cable nut.
We sell an alignment tool that guarantees the correct fit up of this part to OEM dimensions.
The tool does not take the speedo cable hole into account during the fitup of the replacement casting as the hole is not as important as the rest of the dimensions and the hole can be clearanced at a later time with a drill or die grinder.
              Regards Steve
