Which came first and when?

I have two different styles of transmission lids. Both obviously early Panheads. One is sand cast with the 33-49 number inside the lid. The other is die cast with the 33-49 number on the outside edge of the lid. Obviously no date code on these. Any body have original bikes to determine which came first and when?

Could you post a pic of the ends where the shift lever would be? I can see that area very clearly on most of the bikes I've photographed.
