  • Model 58 gen Vs Mod 61? help please

    Hi All:
What I thought was a spare generator for my '59 is a Model 61 and it would appear that the armature oil seal (at the drive end) was quite different from the oil seal on my Model 58. It had a metal retainer cup and the oil seal was deeper than the one on my Mod. 58 or the new seals I ordered for it. According to the catalogues I've seen, the seals should be the same ... but this was certainly a different one. I don't know the history of that Mod. 61 but it didn't appear to be a bodge. Can anyone enlighten me please? I would like to get the Mod. 61 ready to go.

The seal would be the same. Probably the reason for the difference is one is an older one from back in the day and one is a modern one. The main difference between the 58 and the 61 are the armature and the brush end casting. The 58 has a bushing to support the commutator end of the armature (and the armature has a slightly larger OD as well) and externally a flip up oiler to lube the bushing. The model 61 has a needle bearing, no flip up oiler and the armature at that end has a slightly smaller OD to fit the needle bearing ... Perry
