Ok guys...time for one of those stupid questions. My friend and I have been going back and forth for a few days with this and I want to put an end to this crap. ....On the older bikes up by the fill cap on the left tank there is a nob....is that the choke lever ...?

Shut-off valve. Clockwise for OFF, counterclockwise for ON, in the raised position for RESERVE.
But don't feel bad for not knowing. When I bought my '52, the guy I bought it from showed me that knob, and said "Here's how you prime the carb" and proceeded to give it a few pumps, just like he knew what he was doing.
