  • How can I tell an OEM Star Hub?

I'm going to the big BlackHawk Chapter Antique Cycle show and swap meet next weekend. Would love to find some HD Star Hubs (and rims) to replace the old Vtwin Hubs and Wheels I have now... (on my 66 FLH)

The rims are the easy part (I think).. Kelsey Hayes?? Are their any numbers on the OEM rims to help me know they are the right ones?

But on the Hubs....what differentiates an HD hub from an old VTwin or other hub if I'm looking at them on a swap meet table??

    Thanks!!

Here is a couple of pics of a set of KH 71 rims. Curious part is they both has the 62 stamping on them as well as size and date code but only one has the KH logo. Rims for your 66 should look similar. The ones for my 65 are like these.

I believe there are 3? types of 16" rims....40-62, 62-80 and 81+, the 3rd type (81) has a 5/16 hole for the metal valve stem. The earlier uses a rubber valve stem. Palmer explains the difference in the two earlier rims bust says it best when he says that the first rims outer edger is hardly rolled and seems almost flush to the tire when a tire is mounted. The second rim is rolled farther over and back towards the hub

As far as hubs the chrome is aftermarket, the ugly looking one is OEM. Think the quickest way to tell is the lack of a step in the center. Others can probably provide greater detail and knowledge.

      Thanks for the pics!!
I keep hearing about "step hubs".. what is the step in the center and what does it have to do with it being HD or repop?? I thought step hubs were the earlier version hub? (like back in the 30's)

        Old-Hog '66,
Step hubs have a step on the brake side flange, not to be confused with the step in the center, and were on '35 to '39 models.
