I've had real good luck with ITW--- that's "Into The Wilderness". Give 'em a call, they're ready to help!

thanks for the speedy replys, you guys are great. now the next question the star hubs have been in existence for a long time is there any reason to switch to timkins. I know star hub pros are out of business did anyone else pick up the buisness of rebuilding?

I was concerned that the spools in the V-Twin kits might be the wrong hardness, so we tested hardness and they are the same as the originals. Unfortunately, they have been on backorder for a few weeks.

Star hubs are switched to Timkem when people can't figure out how to rebuild them.

How about when the races are so pitted as the only way to re-use them?

I have a couple of hubs that have no guts. I have no problem with going to Timken. Timken bearings are safer, stronger, more accurate, and will last longer than any H-D built hub. However, they are probably more expensive, and by the time you make a new inner axel and all of the other belt and suspender parts needed to keep everything together you probably could have bought 2 rebuilt originals. Indian used Timken bearing hubs in 1930s but must have realized, (like H-D) that a Timken tapered roller bearing will out live it's owner and if it did need to be replaced, Timken would get the business.

the timken bearing set used in harley wheels up through 99 is the same part number and the outer wheel bearing for chevelle. called set 2. available at any napa dealer. my cost with discount $6.85. i make the spacer between the races from 3/4 in water pipe since it doesn't move and is very soft in the harley ones.

Having recently gone through rebuilding my star hubs, I wanted to speak up. The stuff I got from V-Twin was all taiwan made crap that didn't fit and gave me nothing but headaches.

On Rooster's suggestion, I contacted Mike at Into The Wilderness Trading and got everything I needed. All American made parts, James gaskets, etc. Everything fit perfectly the first time. The stuff from V-Twin went into the trash.

More recently, Mike did a *superior* job of restoring my Linkert carb at a fair price, and with quick turnaround.

                        Just my two cents.

Bearing races can be replaced. You use a 45" male rod race and an Ironhead Sportster male rod race. ID grind out the old races. OD grind the rod races to fit. Put the rod races in the freezer then press them in. Lap to standard.

the hubs I have when taken apart have no pitting were full of grease. when apart all the rollers are in perfect shape, I'm thinking of just getting the seal kit and go from there. or should I just get the bearings anyway

Glenn I would mike out the races and sleeve and see what size bearing you may need. It is not uncommon to find that you need to over size them. If you do not need over size then I would reuse the originals.
