  • Sumping

    Two questions.
On my 50FL I'm having significant amounts of oil flowing threw the crank case vent to the primary and pooring to shop floor. I've pulled the check ball and spring and cleaned, also the bypass ball and spring. The check ball is showing minor signs of wear, I haven't pulled the pump off to inspect the seat. I also checked the vent line back to the tank and it is clear.
    1. If the ball seat is the problem can it be replaced or is trying lap it with a lapping compound the best option? Or am I missing the problem all together?(crank case breather timing)???
    2. On the bypass, what is recommended as a setting? Currently I'm 9 turns out.

    Thanks Pete

I believe that Resurction Cycle makes the tool to restore the seat. Balls are simply ball bearings.

Thanks Chris, this sounds like the check ball and seat to you?

You say you check ball is worn. That would also be a good indication that the seat is worn. I don't know how else oil would get into your crankcase while the bike isn't running.
You ask about breather timing. Have you had the gear cover off? If so better recheck your work.
If it happens while it is running remove dipstick and stick your finger into the oil bag to feel if the scavenge pump is returning oil to the tank.

I tried running 20w/50 in my 56, and it sumped any time it sat for more than a day or so. Switched to HD straight 60w, and have had no problems since.

You can make your own lapping tool. Just stick a welding rod fast to an 8866 steel ball, apply compound and lap.

Lapping is futile, as not only does it just widen the seat (those of you who do motorvalves know what I mean,) the mill profile from common compounds is greater than the size of an oil molecule.

Steve's burnishers are the way to go,... but alas! I am told that he did not polish his balls!

(I'd rather someone else... glad I'm married... did mine as well.)

And destroy the pump. You need to buy the correct burnishing tool from Resurrection Cycle.

I haven't had the cover off and I'm getting good return to the tank, running H-D 60W.
I'v only run the bike for probly 10-15 minutes at a time but it continues to puke oil out the breather in those 15 minutes. I must have a shitload of oil in the bottom end and just need to let it run untill it pulls it all out?????

I'v got a tool for the seat and new balls / springs comming.
