Transmission Kick Cover Installation Help

I recently had to remove my 48 panhead transmission side case. it has a hairline crack and I had it welded. Reinstalling the side case has proved to be more of a challenge than removal ( isn't that always the case?) the manual says to pull the push rod out to ensure that the slot in the clutch release bearing aligns with the slot in the clutch release finger and engage the two parts and then move the kick cover into place. The problem is that the push rod is stationary and will not move. Also I seem to have a set of washers with a ring clamp on the end of the push rod and my clutch release bearing has splines on it which looks nothing like that in the manual. This is my first venture into a harley transmission and I would appreciate any help you can give, thanks

You got to take the clutch plate off to releave the rod.

Actually just back off the push rod adjusting screw.

the set of washers is on the kicker side? sounds like someone may have updated to the new style throwout bearing maybe? if so and there are only two washers left then maybe the thrust washer is disintegrated that was between them. if that happens the rod will weld itself to the adjuster on the clutch end of the rod and you wont be able to move it. i have one in my tool box to show people what is wrong with their clutch adjustment. if you cant get it out let me know and i can walk you through it

Does your throw out bearing resemble this one?

Flat happy, apparently I do have an updated set up with the throwout bearing, it is three parts and appears to be intact. I spoke to someone that said no need to engage the rod into the fingers just install the cover and it should line up?

Ohio Rider, mine does not look like that, that appears to be the orignal setup mine is an updated assembly.

any chance you can post a picture? show the finger too if you can. make sure the little needle bearings in the thrust washer are all good. still it should pull right out of the main shaft
