In checking the threads, much has been said about fork lock removal but nothing I can find on install. I've started working on my frame and got out a fork lock I had put away years ago. At least I thought it was an H-D fork lock, now I'm not so sure. Shouldn't there be a grove or hole for the roll pin to fit into? It fits the hole in the frame and looks like it would work otherwise. Also, since I know someone out there has already done this and can either save me the trouble or make me smile, If you pull the stainless face off the later fork lock does it look like the earlier one underneath?

What frame are you putting it into? If it is a used H-D frame and someone pulled the old lock out with a slide hammer the old pin is probably still in the frame. They are very hard to spot on old painted frames. Go out in the sunlight with a magnifying glass and look at the top side of the lock boss. On one side or the other you should find the pin. With the lock removed take a very small drift punch and drive the remains of the pin into the lock cavity and remove it. Check to make sure the steering head lock plunger is in the frame then install your new lock and pin.Be sure to visit;

It's a wishbone frame, lock was pulled when I got it and the roll pin was drilled out. It's the lock cylinder itself that has me puzzled, what does the roll pin engage to hold the lock in? do I drill a hole in it for the pin after I slip it into the frame? Or do I have the wrong lock?

Brain a while back I started searching for the same info. On the Antique Iron or Panhead site a gentleman wrote an in detailed how to do it. I see in your photo you have the Hxxx cylinder (Or as I call it . The Zima Lady special). This cylinder is the last series. It has a small gap running around the rear. As much as it looks like a place for the pin to go. It’s not. In the how to he goes in to detail about inserting the cylinder, slightly drilling into the cylinder for a set mark and then driving the pin. What I decided to do was two options. 1. Tap the hole and use a set screw or 2. Get a small piece of 3/16 split pin from Master-Carr and tap it in locking the cylinder and then just cutting it off with a mini abrasive blade on my flexible shaft drill. I will also look for you when I stop back at the shop today. I might have saved the address to the article. Bob LLast edited by Robert Luland; 05-25-2009, 03:19 PM.

As soon as you are through bashing Zimalady and Zima you may want to study the use of your spell checker.Last edited by Chris Haynes; 05-25-2009, 06:37 PM.Be sure to visit;

Bill's shop is a bit out of the way. But I did make the drive there from Oley a few years ago. I thought the museum was well worth the fare. And I hear he has doubled the size sine I was there.
I have bought a lot of NOS parts from Bill on eBay and I am happy with all I have bought. Of course I know what I am looking at before I buy it.
You badmouth eBay vendors and frame repair shops. Could it be that you don't take time to investigate things before you get impatient and go for it?Be sure to visit;

Brain, I found a part of the post on the Panhead site. Enjoy. Bob L
It isn't has hard as it looks. A 3/32" diameter high speed jobbers length drill will work if your electric drill has a small diameter chuck. Otherwise you need a taper length drill. The hole is 13/32" from the end of the boss. A drill jig makes it easy but isn't necessary. Drill the hole in the boss without the lock in place then insert the lock in the correct position and drill a shallow hole in the outer cylinder. Be careful not to go too deep or you will damage the lock. If you already have the plunger and spring in place you don't need to take the lock back out. Just tap the pin in and go for lunch.
Good luck.
