  • 1958 Panhead handlebar question..

    Hello loved-ones,
Can anybody tell if a handlebar boss is correct for a 58 pan? Also, what would be the correct cover for the riser - x2 caps (56156-49), or one (1) link (56165-49). Does the type of bar was related the clamping method? (buckhorn Vs. speedster) according to the parts book both are correct (49-59), but no info as far as what appropriate to which application.

    Thank you all.

Not sure what boss you're referring to, but I'll guess it's the one on the top tree. The easiest way for me to tell them apart is the fact that the 60 and up tree is designed to have the 56158-49 bushings installed in it. The earlier tree is solid with holes for the bolts as the bushings are in the risers. As for the link, it was used with all rubber mount bars, it is installed over top of the caps so you'll need both if your bars are rubber mounted. The link is covered by Shop dope 287 of 4\15\49.

Ran all is fine with 58. The caps went over the bars and the link decoratively covered them. Make sure ya find the proper acorn nuts or it will cost you. Bob L

Hi bmh, the boss I'm referring to is the piece in the center of the handlebar that looks like a union / joint piece. I have seen handlebars without this extra joint, and I was wondering if this is correct for 1958.

        Thanks,
        Ran

According to Palmer's book (page 55) the center reinforcing sleeve is present on all Glide bars 1951-59. There is a change in the spirals used in Glide bars; early style from '49-'53, and late style from '54-'74 (OHV models). The early Glide handlebars in 1949 and 1950 did not have the center reinforcing sleeve.
