Fishtail muffler 65240-61

Was the fishtailmuffler only for the dual exhaust sytem or also for the 2-1 system?

The various iterations of parts explosions for that era show the cigar-type muffler as used from 48-57 in a single (or 2 into 1) exhaust system and from 58 on in only a single exhaust system. The fishtail system appeared in 58 and was used in the dual exhaust system from then on. An extra quiet version of the fishtail appeared in 62 for the dual system as well.

So, the fishtail was for the dual system and the cigar was for the single.

I've seen quite a few original duals with cigars on, they were shorter than the one used on the single exhaust. I can't find a part # for them in any of my books. My 50-57 book lists the dual exhaust pipe complete as 65425-54 but my 41-54 book makes no mention of them. neither book lists the mufflers but I know they made them.

I own a 50 fl with dual ex it has the small cigar mufflers but no oem # systems been on bike pre 1970.

For what it's worth, Palmer makes mention of the short cigars for 58-65 and lists the fishies as 61 and up, but no part numbers.

Perhaps you mean 65240-58, listed as "mufller short" , shown as a short dual exhaust cigar muffler in my 1958-65 manual. jeff

My -65 and -76 parts manuals both show the 65240-61 muffler with the dual exhaust systems. The cigar type mufflers are shown with the single exhaust systems.

Jeff, that may be it. but there should still be a set to go with the -54 dual headpipes.

In the '56 accessory catalog in the new "dual exhaust section" there is a pic of dual cigar mufflers 65236-50, however I don't think its the shorties you are refering to, I think its the standard size......

Yea it's odd, all my old parts books list the same muffler you refered too 65236-50, muffler chrome (and 65235-50 black). It's listed as 36 and up so it must be the long one. but yet I show the head pipes I mentioned previously....Odd huh?
