  • Direct mount oil filter fitting?

I have a direct mount oil filter for my '49 panhead. It does not use a frame bracket, it mounts directly to the oil tank. What kind of fitting do you use between the return nipple on the tank and the filter? Anybody make them? Thanks

It should thread directly onto the nipple on the tank. Don't even think there was a seal of any type used.

There is a special fitting between the tank nipple and the filter body. But the reason that was discontinued and the mounting bracket designed was that the filter would tear the nipple out of the tank.

I have used this type of filter now for three years with good results. I have used Loctite 577 between the tank nipple and the threaded part of the cover.

I had some questions about this same issue a couple months bag and found this helpful.

Chris, do you have a part # for the missing link adapter? or at least a diagram that shows it? I don't remember ever seeing anything between the tank and the filter housing on any 48's equiped with an early filter. Shop dope 305 is in reference to a parts kit to update the early filter and makes specific mention that the kits " have oil pipes that securely seal" leading one to believe the original design perhaps did not. The conversion kit lists an oil line adapter 63871-50 with a seal 63873-50 threaded into the body with a 63525-50 oil line connector threaded into that. I'd almost be willing to bet that the 63873-50 seal replaced whatever seal was used in the original assembly. Perhaps the part you reference was inserted in place of the -50 adapter?
