1965 Panhead Book Project

paddy, saw the wiring diagram like you suggested...tape! I thought those instructions were for people adding directionals after the fact...not for factory ones. My '65 has the directional switch mounted on the right handlebar between the throttle grip and brake lever clamp and under the starter button with wires running through the bar which I thought was factory stock. It shows the switch just like mine in the same position in the original '65 riders handbook. The first time I disassembled the headlight housing I noticed the small hole on left rear housing...(the one in my picture). It had a ground wire attached to it. Could not figure out what it was for. Then I saw a beat up old housing at a swap meet with the same hole but it had the square or rectangular flasher mounted to it. Then I saw another '65 somewhere with the same hole so I figured that is how the factory must have done it. Now I don't know. Just using an automotive 12 volt flasher mounted somewhere inside housing (can't remember where).
As far as the slots on the panels below the lower side mounting holes...been so long since it has been apart I can't remember if they are there or not. Keith

K welcome to my world.I try to read and ask questions about my 65.Because I have seen certain things that are not the same on every bike.And all those guys said "It was like that from the factory"There quite a few members that are pretty well versed in this year machine and like mr cotten pointed out there were more than just the factoy had their hands involved . I scratch my head somtimes. I have been told and I have seen the stem mirrors with the curve.It is even in the broshure.Yet I have seen pictures of people with their brand new bikes with 66 style mirrors and the picture i beleive dated sept of 65.And the tappet screen is another wonder.Some got it some don't. i give up.I was told that turn signals were a option in 65 and I have seen them without the signal lights.I guess I will just tape mine ,As I dont see myself coming across that type of bracket anytime soon.If you do give me a shout and let me know if you have that slot.I am wondering what that slot was for??? Wish I could add some real substance to this discussion Folks,
But in all honesty, I am compelled to add confusion.

A fellow who worked at the Factory during the period visited occasionally (and once returned with Willie G. "himself", and John D., who didn't bother to come in...) told me when I asked about the indicator lamp colors, that much of the final assembly of such details was left to the dealerships.

Sometimes there is no absolute *AMCA* "correct" assembly.

John, doesn't your flasher clip into a holder (like the 3 clips holding the breakers to the rear fender of your Superglide) that is held to the headlight housing by the 8/32 screw referenced in the earlier posts?

its almost in the center of the bottom picture just above the horn and over slightly. The wire loom at the bottom is for the headlight.

The flasher is shown in the bottom of the two pictures I posted. It is small and rectangular like a main breaker and has a rubber sleeve around it. By the way, my spotlight switch is not in the position it was originally. I moved it down the handlebar closer so the wire loom would be hidden under the cover. Normally they are about half way up the bar on the right side.

John.gotcha on the local of the spotlight switch..Do you have the slot that the instructions refer too???

K, I was reading on the 65 wiring thread under panhead .A member Panz sent steve little a diagram and instructions on the installation of signal diectionals.take a look but believe it or not it says to tape the flasher to the cable or harness see figure 2.I myself have not seen that screw on the panel by the green light.Do you happen to have a slot on both sides on the panels just below the lower side mounting holes as described in the same instructions(figure 2 ri it is a 1/2 inch slot)?????

Great pics of the horn bracket and board. Thanks. Still looking for input on placement of the flasher. Next to the green light dome could be the answer, what's the rest of the 65 owners have to say? Thanks.

The L bracket and rubber mount a '68 and up, if mounted to the top tree, no one will know after the bike is together and it won't break!
