  • Front Chain Oiler - Primary

    Hello everyone,

    Upon opening the primary of the 1960 FLH we have found a lot of dirt sand etc etc.

    We have done a thorough cleaning and even removed and cleaned all the clutch discs.

    At the same time we have reset the oiler screw on the pump back to factory settings (screwed all the way in and backed it 1 1/4 turns).

    After the first test ride we found a lot of oil coming from the drain pipe after the bike was parked. We did not have so much oil before!

    We screwed another 1/4 turn the oiler screw leaving 1 turn out from bottom but still a lot of oil is coming out (see picture)

    What are we missing here? Thanks

    You mentioned that you reset the chain oiler...
    Where was the setting at prior to readjusting it?

    I have some answers for you but I'm wondering the baseline setting was first ...

      Thanks Duke,

      We found the oiler screw to be about 2 turns out from all the way in.

      So we followed the manual which says to screw all the way in and back out 1 1/4 turn to be at the factory setting (ore or less)

        Keep in mind that the oiler tube is also the exhaust of the crankcase breather system, and any excessive oil in the cases from oil pump leakage (sumping) that cannot be picked up quickly by the return side of the oil pump gets blown into the breather passage and dumped into the primary case. Lots of discussion on this issue which is very common . Do a search and lots of info will come up.

          Thanks Rubone and will search the forum for oil sumping as you suggest.

          however this excessive oil spill started after the oiler screw was adjusted.

          Would not that point to the culprit? Or it does not matter?

            Oiler screw doesn't matter. It just drips a little oil into the passage to be blown onto the chain with crankcase pressure. But any excess oil in the crankcases, (a common issue when engines sit unused for long periods), is collected and also blown out that tube.

              Agreed! Just read a few posts after your suggestion Rubone
              In summary should the ball following inspection and cleaning be burnished into the seat with the tool anyhow?
              Will do some more reading on this of course

                Lacovos,

                The metered orifice in the oil pump body will see a reduction in size over time. There are more than one factor that attributes to this reduction.
                Anyhow, when you reset the adjustment screws taper into the metered orifice passage way, you essentially resized the passage way to its original dimensions.
                This is why it now flows more oil at 1 1/4 turns than it was flowing at 2 turns.
