    Exhaust Paint

    Exhaust paint question. I'm working on a late 1948 FL and want to paint the exhaust as close to original as I can. In Palmer's third edition it mentions the exhaust pipes for 1932 to 48 were painted in a "special high-temperature black paint" (pg 869).

    What paint are people using to get close to correct for this exhaust? From pictures this is a glossy finish.

    My understanding is 1937 Chief, Scout, & Sport Scouts had chrome exhaust pipes and a black finish muffler/cut-out. What would Indian use to finish the black muffler/cut? A high heat stove black or a standard black paint? Any opinions on the gloss & best lasting finish? Thanks

      Rustoleum has an ultra high temperature gloss black that I’ve been using. It flattens out over time which gives it a more authentic look in my opinion. Maybe not the best option if you’re looking for your bike to remain newly restored forever.

                  Thanks to all of you for the information. I want the bike to start off correct but then age appropriately over time since I plan to ride it. I like the idea of the paint flattening over time as I assume that is what the factory exhaust paint did.

                  I use H-D Heat Resistant Silver (98660-78) for panhead cylinders (ordered from local H-D dealer). I tried searching online for 98606FL and couldn't find it but I did find this H-D Exhaust paint - 98606BAY.
                  This appears gloss per the lid. I'll see what the dealer has to say.

                  In the mean time I am ordering the PJ1 and Rust Oleum High Heat Ultra semi-gloss so I'll have some options.

                      most of the high temp paints recommend that you put the painted pieces in the oven to cure. That gives them a uniform color throughout the entire pieces. I'v always do this process twice, giving the headers, pipes and muffler resistant to scratches and normal wear for extended life. I like the PJ1 paint, not so much for the POR products. To each, his own.. spending time with the prep process makes for better results. Good Luck, C2K
