  • 48 Panhead – front chain guard mounting - upper/lower – easy question!

    Hi Guys - The front chain guard is mounted at the rear by using an upper and lower bracket with an assembly of bolt/washer/spring/pin, but how are they arranged and what is the purpose of the spring?

    Is the arrangement I have drawn correct, and if so, is the purpose to allow the components a degree of movement contained by the spring pressure?

    I think your diagram looks right. Here is a pic of my '48. Pretty sure it is installed correctly (although could use some GUNK!) 48 CHAINGUARD.jpg

          Only tighten the nut enough to get the cotter pin into the bolt to allow for vibration otherwise your inner primary cover will crack.

              Vibration is only part of it, Greg,..

              Rigid frames are spring-tempered to flex; It is the primary suspension.

              The flex focus is right there.

              So it is really a chainguard dampener!
