1965 FL information for restoration

I recently purchased a 1965 FL basket case from BC Canada. It could be a Vancouver Police bike being an FL. I had a 66 FL that was a Vancouver police bike. I would like to restore it to original. I have a 66 FLH that is quite original but do not know how many differences there are. Does anyone know when the police gate shifter was first used? was it 65 or 66? Did 1965 have automatic advance distributor or did it still have the manual advance. It has 2 bolts holding it down but my 66 has 1 bolt and a clamp.

1965 FL motorcycles that had a handshift used 3.5 gallon tanks instead of the new 5 gallon. 1966 was the first year of the frame mounted shift lever. 1965 used a one year only self advancing timer.

Yes but 3.5 gallon tanks only. Never on the 5 gallon tanks.

I will be tearing the engine down over the holidays and will try and balance and get the bottom end back together before the new year.
I think I will paint it Holiday Red as the Vancouver Police Department in BC painted all of their tins red. I think I'll paint bags birch white

I know exactly what you mean, Paddy...

It was certainly a forum member who sent me this notation for 3.5 tanks, but it would take both a search of my desktop as well as the forum to jog my memory. We thank him again..

My set has been waiting to be taped for about a decade, so I haven't tried to decipher the notes

Only one side is presented, but I know from experience that the only way to lay out tanks to match is to bolt them to a bare frame.for eyeballing.

How do you know you need to re-balance if you haven't torn it down?

From the way it was assembled zero end play on the rotating assembly, zero side play on the connecting rods. I will check balance but I think the guy who built it didn't own a micrometer or dial idicator

To reiterate what T Cotton says about eyeballing paint layout-I laid out a 56 left tank, made a template of it for the right side. It wasn’t even close in relation to the badges.
