H-D never painted cylinders "flat" black. All painted cylinders started out gloss, even early '48s.

And the tappet blocks I encountered, Dan,..

Were cast aluminum until '53 or so.

I was under the impression that very early 48 tappet blocks were cast iron. Is that correct?

          I don't think I've ever seen a cast iron 48-52 tappet guide.
