  • Pinion shaft

While rebuilding 52 PAN engine it was noted that end of pinion shaft has threaded hole. I researched and discovered that a left handed thread screw 24020-51 is installed in some applications. Is this screw necessary and what purpose would it serve?

Yes it is necessary for proper oiling. Without it the oil comes out the end of the shaft and not to the rods as intended.

Thanks Rubone. One more question because I read somewhere but not sure if it was for this application that there is a .009 hole drilled in the screw. Is there also suppose to be a small hole in this screw or is it just a plug? I ordered a screw supposedly part # 24020-51 but it did not look like there was a hole in the screw, hopefully it is the correct part.

It is a plug, no holes. Make sure it is not too long and covers the feed hole in the side of the shaft though. Some aftermarket are too long.
