    I'm all for hand-carving, Folks!

But how do you follow your progress to avoid going too far,.. ink?
And how do you inspect your final result?

Lapping for contact seems the most practical. And please remember Otis is looking for a flaw that ain't obvious.

This silicon-bronze repaired block in my hand called the file a bastard: Some parts are now harder than others.

Estate sales, a little hunting but find some good stuff sometimes.

The silicon bronze sometimes mixes with the cast iron producing an alloy that is hard as glass. I think this is caused by too much heat melting the iron. Nearly impossible to machine.

Its my own fault for trying to support my TIGmeister, Larry!

He insisted on it; I should have torched it myself with old plston rings.

Not entirely his fault. There's a very fine line between just enough and too much. Add to that the geometry of a corner reducing the rate of heat dissipation. I've had exactly the same problem repairing tappet guides. I've heard that silicon bronze can be used with acetylene and flux, although I've never tried it.

However, the original post was about possible warpage of the mounting flange. I believe that simple tools and patience is the answer.

Its not that I don't know how to use a "Swedish Mill", Larry!

(I carve HX throttlediscs to minimal daylight.)

Its about inspection. Especially if you have a worm in the can like Otis.

So I took longer than I should to face a 1/4" plate and bore it.

You can see I still have agony to go through with the silicon bronze, (Hell, I shoulda sacrificed some Stay-Silv!),
so I may not have a chance to dress and lap the block to it until long after Davenport, which is hanging over me like a storm.

But every imperfection must be found.

Interesting concept. Let us know how it works out.
