  • Introduction & Questions

Hello I am a new AMCA member from Arkansas. I would like
your opinions on the engine work on my 49 Pan. The bike is
original except for paint ect. Some parts have been damaged
like the sand cast sliders by over buffing. I have had the bike for
several years. I sold my 04 Honda Superhawk last week & will
use the money to get the Pan on the road while I am still able
to kick start (my knees are going fast). The bike is all stock and very original The engine runs but does not sound well I will take down and inspect. What mods would the forum suggest. The heads, cylinders, ect. are original 49 the hydraulic lifters have been removed. I will ride some but not over 2K / yr. Thanks Fred

    Fred!

    I urge a conservative approach.

Don't tear the motor out until you have eliminated the original pushrods, and other minor concerns that often affect motor personality.

49's also had signature problems with their steel intake manifolds. Fixing that alone might make it a 'whole new machine'.

If indeed the vehicle has an original Factory-assembled chassis, you would best preserve your investment by preserving history, and leaving as much intact as possible.

They are more fun that way anyway.
