Recently purchased a 1964 Duo Glide. I've had it about a month and have only been able to ride it about 6 or 8 times. On a local ride a couple of days ago, I noticed some clatter when I was cruising a backroad at about 40mph, approx 40 minutes into the ride. It quit as quick as I noticed it. I finished the ride about 15 minutes later and noticed some grey smoke puffing out of the right exhaust while idling on the side stand. No oil light and no clatter, but I have not noticed the smoke on the other rides. I brought the rpms up a little and the smoke went away. I left it idling for a about 5 minutes while I was checking the voltage at the battery. Then, it started clattering and the oil light on the dash, and the one on the nacelle came on. I shut it down as quick as I could.
Today, I'm starting the diagnosis. First, checked the oil tappet screen to make sure it was clean. Yep, fine. Next, I dropped the canister on the oil filter and it has oil in it. So I pulled the seat off, started it up, no oil lights. I'm still getting light haze from the exhaust at idle. I let it run for about 3 or 4 minutes
and looked in the oil tank to see if I can see any flow. I can't see anything obvious to make me feel there is oil circulating. The tank is a little over half full. I stuck my finger in the tank, over the oil lines and I can feel air and maybe an oil mist, but no real "flow".
Should I see a flow of oil coming back into the tank when idling? When I brought the idle up a little, no change in the flow that I could see. Any suggestions would be appreciated!
