Was the positive red wire that runs from the battery to the terminal behind the coils and then to the voltage regulator on a 64 FL 14 gauge or was it a heavier gauge?

On my 64 it's 14 the same as the rest of the harness wires. See some with heavier wire but didn't look like stock harness.
