Panhead/Shovelhead rear Brake Linings 1963-up

rear brake linings of 1963-1972 models appear to have different widths. 1-3/4” and 1-1/2”.

does any of the experts here know why and which one goes where?

IIRC, the 58-62 shoes are not as wide as 63-72 shoes, maybe that's what you have...

no, 58-62 shoes are approx 1-1/4” wide, the pair of linings which i have is 1-1/2" and 1-3/4” wide

My 58-62 is 1-5/16" , 63-72 1-13/16" I have no idea what the other is for?? VW beetle perhaps lol

Many H-D shoes were different widths, usually the "leading "shoe is narrower with the "trailing" shoe being wider. This helped with chatter and grab due to the self servo effect of drum brakes with a single leading shoe. The "leading" shoe is the one with the end near the cam (or in your case slave cylinder plunger") facing the direction of rotation.
