  • 63-64 fiberglass bags with stapled seals

Could anyone help me find a supplier that can sell me some new seals for my early '64 saddlebags that have the seal stapled to the top of the box?
    Thanks, Jerry

I found some sealing material that will work, if it would help someone else someday. After I figured out what description to put in the search box I found it on Amazon and eBay. It's called u channel rubber edge trim. There are a lot of kinds but this one matched the dimensions of the original seal. The old stuff was gray and I could only find black, but I'm happy just to find it, and it's not very expensive. Jerry

Interesting, as I have seen early examples that have the gasket stapled, but the vast majority of the "early" shaped fiberglass lowers I have owned did not show any holes where staples might have once been present. And those staples were rather large. I wouldn't think that everyone filled the holes up. This makes me wonder if they might have changed to glue for a while before the lid gaskets finally emerged. I have an early lower right now unrestored with the original grey gasket and no staples or holes.

I saved all the original staples but I think I will have to use some 3M weatherstrip adhesive to re-install the seals, because I have no way to staple them again. I have been careful not to fill in the holes from the staples and had visions of straightening all of the staples and re-using them by making holes in the new seal and pushing the staples through by hand. I don't think I will though, because I don't care about having my bikes judged. It's possible back then that they didn't have adhesives like we have now and staples were about the only way they could do it.
