  • Which linkert for an Early 1950 panhead

    52425519078__D7216A4D-98E3-45A1-A3C8-FFECD2ABD083.jpgHi Guys,

I have 2 copies of Palmers book and of course neither are on hand...

I have an early FLH serial number is in the mid 2000 series.

A nice fellow has offered to sell me an M36 rebuilt at a decent price (tbd)

Is this carb or a straight M74 correct for the FLH?

    Thanks,

    Craig

    Craig!

    Palmer's 1st Edition cites M-45 for early '50, and M-74 for late.

But if you have an "H" in your VIN, I wouldn't worry about "correct" anyway.

"Rebuilt" is obviously a very loose term!

PS: It ain't even gonna run like that....

I think 1955 was the first year for the FLH. Like Tom said, if there's an 'H' in your serial number, you have another problem.

I don't think there's an H, old memory lol. But I will check.

When did the M74B come into affect and what is/are the difference(s)? I have several M74Bs and was planning to run a 74B on my 56FL (not a 'FLH').
            Thanks,
            William

              William!

Again citing Palmer's, the "B" appeared in later '51.

Please note that there were two very different M74s with no "B" (most common shown on top in attachment), and at least four different forms with "B"s.

Thanks for info Cotten. I read through Chapter 5, fuel systems in both Palmer's 1st and 2nd editions most have missed. Found a little more model/body detail in 'the Linkert Book' by Victory Library. William

                  William!

My Victory pamphlet is ancient. Does your newer printing give any years for the changes in M74Bs?

                  Thanks in advance,

                    Cotten,

I'm ancient, your pamphlet not so much. My copy is the 30 May 2007, Ver. 2.21. I did not see year changes for the M74B. My copy notes in Table 8; M74 with a 1-5/16" venturi for 1950-1950 1/2 and M74Bs for 1950 1/2 to 1964. Table 9 delves into different "state of tune" and carb selections. Your pamphlet is a great resource!!

                    Have you updated your pamphlet?

                    Thanks,
                    William

                      William!

My copy of Victory Library's "The Linkert Book" (http://victorylibrary.com/main_menu.htm) is probably a decade older than yours, or more. Haven't seen it in nearly as long.
                      Its around here somewhere...

Liberty has never produced a pamphlet.

But I do include vintage literature reprints with various services, which prevents me from ever registering with the AMCA's on-line library.

                        Cotten,

I misunderstood your "my" thinking you produced the Linkert Book.

                          William!

                          Its a common confusion.

Jeff Diamond produces the Victory Library. He still participates on a forum or two that he hasn't been ragged off of..
Ironically, I have been ragged off of those.

Nothing worse than "moderators" with self-centered agendas.
