You might try something like Easy Off oven cleaner.

Easy-Off works well on chrome exhaust pipes. However I would not use it on aluminum crankcases. Where aluminum is concerned, it is highly corrosive. The chances of it etching the cases are likely as the paint dissolves.

Fabes does resolve the etching from the oven cleaner by polishing his cases, but polishing is not a good resolution for original panhead cases.

I just did a 1952 Panhead motor that was painted. Used orange sented Homer Formby's paint remover. Bought at WalMart? Let it set for maybe 10-15 minutes and then used a soft brass wire brush to get at the tough spots. Washes up with soap and water. Worked pretty well. Had to do some detail picking with a sharpened dowl rod.
