  • 49 loss of power in 4th

    Hello to all
I have a 49 hydra glide. It runs good, with good power in 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears but when I get on the highway and reach speeds of 50 or more, it seems to hesitate as if not getting enough fuel. When on any long incline in 4th gear, it really starts to fade out. The more throttle I give it, the less it goes. I’m just learning my way around this machine and I am in no way a mechanic but I’m trying to learn. Any help would greatly be appreciated.

    Bob!

Since we can only be theoretical,
I would suggest that the carb is already over enrichened to accomodate a vacuum leak which is greatest at low speeds. Thus it 'chokes' at open throttle.

The first diagnostic is a simple bubble-test: http://virtualindian.org/11techleaktest.html

If you get no bubbles, it might then be an assembly issue with the carb or linkages.

      Thanks for the info
Would an air leak also cause a pop sound when backing off on throttle in lower gear?

        Bob!

Never does only one thing go wrong at a time.

You may need to tend to your exhaust as well..

Besides what Cotton says,[intake leaks & exhaust leaks]throttle shaft and bushing clearance should be checked
High speed loss of power can be head gaskets leaking compression
