  • Hyrda-Glide Top Fork Cover

Can anyone tell me the heights of the OEM Hydra-Glide Top Front Fork Cover (Panels)? i.e. p/n 46273-49 with straight accent lines and p/n 46273-49A with slanted accent lines – I assume both are the same height. I’m asking since I’ve read that the repop’s (V-Twin?) are 1/4” shorter and I’m looking for an OEM -49A for my ’56.
    Thanks,
    William

The fake covers are easy to determine when compared to a real piece. They appear to be made of different stainless steel than the originals, and the accent lines and lettering are more crisp on the originals.

I have 2 original straight accent line covers that measure 7.62" - 7.68" at their tallest point. I also have a question about them. Were they ever chromed? Both are slightly magnetic. I got the chromed cover from a retired North Florida H-D dealer. It seems odd that they would be chromed since H-D made them from a S.S. alloy so they wouldn't have to be chromed.

They were also made in black from mild steel. Many of those were chromed after the fact and many dealers offered a chrome exchange . Also, some stainless pieces exhibit mild magnetism, especially after being worked (the stamping process).

My slanted line cover measures 7-5/8" along mounting holes and 7-3/4" (face down, top to bottom along center line) and is chromed (assuming repop and mildly magnetic).

If someone could post photo(s) with an original cover/script vs. a repop cover/script that would be greatly appreciated.

          Thanks,

I hope these picture help William. I don't have a reproduction cover to compare, but the crisp edges in the Hydra-Glide logo are plain evidence of high quality tool and die. Particularly, on the obverse die side. A sad reminder of our lost industrial arts heritage.

Thank you Eric! Wow, it's very apparent mine is after market when comparing the lettering. I agree this lost art is sad. That ingenuity it's part of what draws me to these vintage scoots!

Here's an original next to a reproduction .
You can clearly see the difference, notice the V stamp in the front is pronounced , and the original is much more subtle. Also the wiring hole is much larger on repop.

Some more views. The dimensions are the same, but they don't look the same.
