  • Question about Cam gear

    Gentleman,

What could be the reason, that my early Panhead (1959) fires up very bad.
We did a CLT at 75 psi, checked the carburetor and changed the cam gear to a stock (74) cam gear.
When she finally runs it isn't smooth.
Playing with the needles don't give any improvement.

Is the lift of the stock cam gear a possible reason for this bad performance?

    Thanks in advance,

    Joe

Nope ...a stock cam is not going to make it run bad. You're going to have to do some troubleshooting. Pull the circuit breaker over off and see what the points are doing. Change points and condensor, check wire resistance, coil resistance, change plugs . Check for intake leaks, sticking valves.

You're just going to have to go through it and eliminate what you can. Don't do two things or more at once because if it works you won't know what the fix was.

What Dewey said.... it's a process of elimination now. I assume you double checked your pushrod adjustment??

Was the throttle plate ever out, may be in backwards.

Thanks for the suggestions, but my mechanic and I have this all checked.
The case is a "fake" '59, it has a brass bearing instead of a Torrington bearing.
            Which cam gear fits?
Has the profile of the cam gear influence on the bad performance?
Is a so called "Victory cam" useful in this case?

            Thanks,

            Joe
