  • Panhead Police Bike -- Ex Sandanista/Nicaragua

I referenced this bike in another post. Saw it Friday and was in love.

Today, I had the EL out for a ride and stopped back at Harbor Vintage where this bike is in for some work and re-commissioning. Apparently an original sidecar is also being fitted/refitted.

I snapped some pictures. I don't know who the owner is, but he is one lucky guy!

I have two more, but have to attach them in the next post.

    Last two.

I wonder... if your name got written down on the notepad, did you and your entire family disappear?

This bike is an unbelieveable reference machine. It's just like new, under a little dust. The stories it must be able to tell.

    Cheers,

    Sirhr

Beautiful bike, can someone educate me on the spark plug wires? Were they different not to interfer with police radio? Thanks, Bob AMCA#6738

They would be shielded to prevent spark interference, also called EMP. It was part of a police radio package. Also was fitted on some WLA/WLN/WLC military bikes. From memory... but I recall from one of the restoration guides that there was a special manufacturers code that went with either the bike or the ignition systems when they had shielded components.

There were various shielded cables over the years for radio equipped bikes. These are '40s type for use with the 18mm air cooled plugs.

They are grounded to the coil body and are used for radio noise suppression equipment. A condenser bolts on one with the other end connected to the hot post. The other connects to the shielded timer wire. Here is the wiring diagram which shows it!

Thanks Robbie. It's interesting that so many condensers were used.
