    Dust Ring (shield)

I've looked through the Palmer book and can't pin down what the finish should be for the dust ring and rear sprocket on the 51 FL. All I can find is the drum should be black. Maybe the whole assembly was painted after riviting together?

Both the sprocket and dust ring are parkerized. Do yourself a favor when you do this. Get some #6 screws at Home-Puke and screw the whole thing together. Then rivet one hole at a time leaving the screws and nuts in the remaining holes. If you don't do this the dust ring deforms into a total mess. If ya got the option, power coat the drum in low gloss black. You will be forever happier. Bob L

I once had a NOS brake drum assembly. The sprocket and shield were Parkerized and masked off when the rest of the drum had been black painted.
